Introducing Ourselves

The Night of the Logo
At yachtWORKS we hear repeatedly that our logo is enjoyed and found interesting and appropriate. To hear this pleases us, thank you. And here it is, how it was developed.

It needed three: Suat, a painter and my spouse, Burak, a good friend, a naval architect and designer and myself. Somehow I managed to keep a record of the creation process and here is the short story, which mainly progressed through the night of March 6, 2001.

It all started with a hand drawing by Suat – this happened maybe one day in advance to our night session. Before inevitably being carried to the computer it started on paper. It must have been on a scrap paper...

Actually, as you can see in the detail enlarged below, the idea is already complete, certain details like the capital “WORKS” and bows to the right can be well recognized.
or on another, later scrap by Suat:
As of that, all what it needed was a pleasing bow, I thought. I decided for “Kochab”. A drawing was found in Eric Hiscock’s classic “Voyaging under Sails”. Here you can admire “Kochab”. Actually “Kochab” is not only a pleasing appearance, but she symbolizes those forms we all admire most:
And here her silhouette, carefully “peeled” by Burak:
Next came a number of variations on colour and interactions between the name and the shape. Comes in again Suat, setting the colours:
in detail:
Red, navyblue, “bodrum” set off to “yachtWORKS”, horizontal lines, a pleasing bow to the right. We are almost there, are we not?

Of course not quite, as most of the night was spent with variations in colour, characters and shapes. However, slowly it converged. Here is an example:

At the same time Burak was readily converting the bitmaps into a lovely vector drawing. Here you can already see one result:
Meanwhile I tried to “brush” Suat’s colours and shapes into the bitmap.
Which promptly triggered Burak for further vectors:
Eventually all started to converge as of midnight. Here is, where we were at about 3 AM in the morning:
Next day it needed a few mugs of coffee for Burak to finalize to what is now our “official”logo
With warm thanks and appreciation to Burak and Suat and also to Can for the unusual approval on the spot the next afternoon :)
